This week's winner:

A conductor might falter or stall,
Or his name might help pack out a hall.
But one fact's the same:
That, whatever his fame,
Alone, he makes no sound at all!

Blanche Charles, Kapiti

Highly commended:

An angry conductor named Russ
Created such a big fuss
When he yelled and he yelled
The musicians rebelled
And now he's conducting a bus

Ray Gilbert

Furtwängler, Wagner and Strauss
Ormandy, Barbirolli and Krauss.
Wood, Toscanini,
Alfredo Antonini,
Beecham, Tilson Thomas, and Brauss.

Kathy Gillard, Christchurch

To rule their ensemble or band
The conductor, with baton will stand
But things got unruly
for Jean-Baptiste Lully
When the baton flew out of his hand

Martin Dew

A conductor whom patrons adore
for giving that little bit more
Will encounter their odium
When leaving the podium
For straying too far from the score.

Martin Dew

The conductor said, "Yes, while I do
Work quite hard at rehearsals, it's true,
At the concert I mount
To the podium and just count . . .
It's too late, then, to change what they do!"
