The anti-corruption watchdog Anticor has called for last Sunday's provincial elections in New Caledonia to be annulled.

Voters went to the polls to choose new provincial assemblies in an election that also determined the composition of Congress.

Anticor has issued a statement saying during the campaign the main political groupings were responsible for a number of irregularities so the results should be annulled.

It said widely accepted democratic rules were ignored.

The statement referred to suspected phantom jobs, undeclared documents and other unspecified manoeuvres.

Local media quoted an Anticor leader saying he advised the French High Commission and wants to initiate legal action on Friday.

Parties have two months to submit their campaign accounts.
