Four adults and two children have died from meningitis so far this year in Fiji according to an FBC news report.

Head of Health Protection from the Ministry of Health Aalisha Sahukhan said in addition to the six deaths, there have been 10 other confirmed cases of the disease.

He said meningococcal disease is very serious with signs including headache, fever, neck pain, nausea and vomiting as well as a red or purple rash.

Dr Sahukhan said the illness is spread by close contact and anyone with symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
