An ADB transport specialist, Alexandra Pamela Chiang, said improved climate and disaster resilience at the port along with better border security and efficiency will increase trade competitiveness, particularly for Samoan exports.

She said this will stimulate the economy, generate local employment, boost trade, and improve people's lives.

The project will repair the badly damaged breakwater, making it capable of withstanding a 110-year storm event and 50 years of sea level rise.

The project will also upgrade terminal and customs infrastructure.
