Members of New Zealand's Niuean community are celebrating Niue Language Week this week with school speech competitions, dance workshops, art exhibits, sports and church services.
For every person living in Niue there are around 12 people of Niuean descent living in New Zealand and the Niuean language is classified as endangered by UNESCO.
Lynda Lakua-Makensi is a community worker supporting young people of Niuean heritage in Hamilton and she spoke with Jenny Meyer about keeping the language alive.
