RNZ Welcomes Appointment of Dr. Jim Mather

RNZ has welcomed the appointment of Dr. Jim Mather as the new Chair of Radio New Zealand’s Board of Governors.

Dr Mather is of Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe and English descent. He is an experienced senior executive with a reputation for successfully leading transformational change in a range of organisations. He is currently the Chief Executive of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, a role he has held since 2013. Before that he was the Chief Executive of Māori Television for nine years.

RNZ CEO, Paul Thompson, said Jim Mather brings a wealth of business, management, and media experience to the role.

“I look forward to working with Jim and the board as we continue to develop RNZ’s multimedia strategy to provide strong, independent and high quality public media in this country.”

Jim Mather said he was looking forward to taking up the new position.

“RNZ’s commitment to professional journalism that questions, celebrates and holds to account, is an immensely valuable resource for all New Zealanders. RNZ has an enviable reputation in a fast evolving and increasingly diverse New Zealand society and I look forward to working with the RNZ team."

Dr. Mather has been appointed for a three year term.
