Corrections is calling for more powers to read, copy and store letters coming in and out of prisons, now that a review of its mail system has identified 'deficiencies' in the law.
The independent review was ordered in August after a botch-up allowed the accused Christchurch mosque gunman to send two letters from his cell that should not have been allowed out.
It was a major blunder involving New Zealand's highest profile inmate - now it's brought to light a litany of problems with the wider prison mail system.
