Tornado tears up roofs in Christchurch

From Checkpoint, 5:08 pm on 18 November 2019

A roof has collapsed, buildings are damaged and two people are injured after a tornado slammed into Christchurch on Monday afternoon.

The weather in the central city changed suddenly after 1.30pm, with large hailstones pelting the city, thunder, strong winds - and even a tornado.

Fire and Emergency says it received a multitude of calls after the wild weather hit, with people reporting roofs life and air conditioning units falling off buildings.

A roof collapsed at the SaveMart in Sydenham injuring two people inside.

Roofing debris is littering several central city streets and people are being asked to steer clear as it may contain asbestos.

Checkpoint reporter Logan Church headed out to speak to those hardest hit and filed this report.
