A devastating start to the Kokako breeding season is worrying those trying to save the threatend native bird.

Two chicks, three nests and five eggs have been destroyed by rats at the Forest and Bird Ark in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges.

A spokesperson for Forest and Bird Anna-lily van den Broeke says it's a tragic blow.

She spoke to RNZ reporter Katie Doyle about what happened.
