Govt to act on report advice to lower petrol prices

The Commerce Commission has confirmed what many drivers already suspected: they're probably paying too much at the petrol pump.

The competition watchdog says the big fuel companies' stranglehold over supply means at the retail end of the market, consumers are paying higher than expected prices for petrol and diesel.

It has recommended a raft of changes to increase competition and lower prices at the pump - and the government has already indicated it is prepared to act.
