Hawke's Bay's leaders say a new social housing package will help to reach their goal of ending homelessness within five years.

Housing Ministers Megan Woods and Nanaia Mahuta were in the region on Thursday to announce the government will build 160 new homes in Hastings in the next 18 months.

It comes as around 1,000 people in Hawke's Bay are living in emergency or transitional housing, following a dire shortage of affordable homes or rental properties.
