Film industry boom a headache for local filmmakers

Amazon's new billion dollar series inspired by the Lord of the Rings is based in Auckland but is being filmed across the country.

It's not the only major company with projects being filmed in New Zealand; Netflix's new live-action series Cowboy Bebop and the long awaited sequels to James Cameron's Avatar are already in the works.

But the offshore demand for content production is causing headaches for the local film industry, which is struggling to find workers or studio space amidst all of the action.

Phil Smith is the chief executive of Great Southern Television in Auckland.

He speaks to Kim Savage.
