Tapu Te Ranga Marae plans new building

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 11 June 2019

The whānau from Tapu Te Ranga Marae in Wellington's Island Bay have begun planning to build a new papakāinga - or shared living space - where their marae once stood.

They have been meeting with the Wellington City Council and the Minister for Māori Development Nanaia Mahuta, about the marae's future after much of it was destroyed in a fire at the weekend.

A whānau spokesperson Gabriel Tupou told RNZ reporter Meriana Johnsen the fire has pushed forward their plans to rebuild the marae, and a papakāinga on the site.
