Kits to convert pistols into weapons similar to banned firearms still legally being sold

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 30 August 2019

Kits which can convert a standard semi-automatic pistol into a firearm similar to the banned military style semi-automatics are still legally on sale in New Zealand - and the police minister is looking into banning them. After the Christchurch terror attacks the military style semi-automatic firearms were banned, but many pistols that can be modified to include 50-round drum magazines, folding stocks and red-dot sights are still being sold legally in the country. A second tranche of legislation was signalled last month with a raft of further changes to the firearms act - including establishing a firearms register, making it harder to get and keep a licence and establishing licences for gun ranges and shooting clubs. Morning Report Producer Jeremy Wilkinsons has more.
