Ōtaki wānanga recieves one-off $10 million grant

From Morning Report, 6:19 am on 5 December 2019

An Ōtaki-based wānanga has received a one-off $10 million grant to reset its relationship with the Crown, and address research funding deficits.

Te Wānanga o Raukawa argued in its Waitangi Tribunal claim submitted in 2017 that the Performance Based Research Fund, which allocates money to tertiary education providers for research, did not support funding of Māori knowledge.

It has never applied to the fund set up in 2004, but estimates it's lost out on over $10 million in funding it would have received under the old funding model.

Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis told Te Manu Korihi reporter Meriana Johnsen he recognises the stand that the wananga took against the fund.
