Summer Jams: Samuel Flynn Scott shares his favourite summer song

From RNZ Music, 1:30 pm on 6 January 2018

Our favourite local musicians share the song that's their soundtrack to summer. Sam Scott of The Phoenix Foundation picks 'Bad Liar' by Selena Gomez.

Name: Samuel Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation, Bunnies on Ponies)

See him play: With Phoenix Foundation at Tuki Festival in Wanaka, or in August on their 20th anniversary tour with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Goals for 2018: Listen more. Don’t drink anything that’s not delicious.

Summer hack: Keep togs and towels in the car at all times. And try and swim every day in any way possible. We are walking fish, stranded on land by the cruel whimsy of evolution.

Favourite summer jam: Why would you eat jam in summer when you can eat fresh berries instead? Berries are the best food in the world.

Lol, no - favourite summer jam, as in song! Selena Gomez - ‘Bad Liar’

Why: "It’s kind of the only new song I’ve heard this year that’s really captivated me. I don’t know why it really sucked me in so much.

"It has a really cool groove, Tina Weymouth playing the bass, the Talking Heads bassline from ‘Psycho Killer’ … and I just really like Selena Gomez’s voice.

“The first time I heard it … I was like, 'Oh yeah, this is it, this is my jam of the year.' ... It has that clarity of singing right into your brain, that y’know Blondie would have ... When you can hear someone having a good time recording, that’s what I find exciting.”
