Eight quick questions with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker

From RNZ Music, 12:00 pm on 15 February 2020

Australian psych act Tame Impala – aka Kevin Parker – has just released his fourth album, The Slow Rush, and plays Auckland’s Spark Arena on April 16. Music 101’s Charlotte Ryan fired him eight quick questions.

The Slow Rush is Tame Impala's first album since 2015’s worldwide breakthrough Currents. With song titles including ‘One More Year’, ‘Tomorrow's Dust’, and ‘It Might Be Time’, you’d be forgiven for thinking Parker was obsessed with time.

“For this album I’ve been loving the idea of making songs about the past and the future – anticipating the future and that kind of stuff.”

“There are various points in my life where I feel empowered to take a step back and think about everything that has been, and everything that will be, and everything inbetween. So, these songs are inspired by those sorts of moments.”

The questions:

If you could go back in time, when would you go?

1960’s

Beatles or Rolling Stones?

Beatles

What’s a record that changed your life?

Talkie Walkie by Air

Drink of choice?

Gin... Are we talking alcohol? Actually, you know what, it’s gin anyway... or red wine. I’m gunna say red wine. It’s a better all-rounder.

Legalise marijuana?

I agree. I’ve spent some time in Los Angeles where it’s legal, and it seems to be working really well. It seems like a harmonious system.

What does love feel like?

Like nothing else.

Who’s playing at your dream festival?

Kanye West, Chemical Brothers, Tame Impala, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Playing live, or recording in a studio?

They’re apples and oranges. Completely different.

Tame Impala play Auckland’s Spark Arena on Thursday, April 16. Tickets from Ticketmaster.
