West Coast whitebaiter on new government proposals

A shake-up of the whitebaiting rules is on the cards, with the government unveiling changes aimed at saving four species currently threatened by extinction.

The changes include a shorter season and establishing safe havens in rivers for spawning - but they stop short of imposing catch limits.

But what do whitebaiters think of the changes - and are they necessary?

The president of the West Coast Whitebaiters Association, Cheryl Riley spoke to Leigh-Marama McLachlan.
