Te Papa has unveiled details of its new nature zone, the biggest change to the museum since it opened 21 years ago.

Te Taiao Nature, which opens to the public on 11 May, combines Western science with mātauranga Māori, or traditional Māori knowledge.

It will feature 1200 collection items, including a 700-year-old moa egg.

The new zone includes dozens of interactive experiences, from creating your own tsunami to weighing in against a giant moa.

The exhibition replaces the previous nature area, which closed last April.

Te Papa chief executive Geraint Martin said Te Taiao Nature is unlike anything else in the world and every New Zealander should see it for themselves.
