About 30 domestic regional flights have been cancelled and 35 delayed, and Auckland International Airport was earlier warning passengers to expect further delays.

One service to and from Wellington is among those delayed and a flight from Blenheim was diverted to Rotorua.

International flights have not been affected.

People are urged to check their flight details before they leave home.

The Transport Agency is warning drivers to take care as fog and low cloud reduces visibility on the motorways.

A multi-vehicle crash earlier blocked southbound lanes of the Southwestern Motorway, near the Dominion Rd on-ramp, and motorists were being advised to use alternative routes if possible.

Queenstown flight delays

Heavy fog also blanketed Queenstown Lakes District disrupting morning flights at the town's airport.

Several flights were delayed or cancelled.
