Clean-up begins in Levin after downpour causes surface flooding

A clean-up is underway in the Horowhenua region after heavy rain yesterday.

Emergency services dealt with extensive surface flooding in Levin, where MetService says 36.6 millimetres of rain fell.

The district council's emergency controller, Toni Magi, said the rain flooded several properties in the town, and one had to be evacuated because sewage got into the house.

"We had such a huge downpour of rain in such a short period of time and because we've had so much rain in the last few weeks the water had nowhere to go."

The council said most of the surface flooding has now receded, but staff were kept on call overnight in case of further emergency.
