The surplus for businesses with Māori authority status was more than $700 million in 2017.

Māori authority businesses include assets held in communal ownerships, such as larger farming, forestry, fisheries companies and small land trusts.

They paid salaries and wages of about $470m in 2017, down slightly on 2016, but up 36 percent since 2012.

Statistics New Zealand said it was working hard to be able to identify small-to-medium Māori businesses so they could be included in revised statistics.
