RNZ Concert launches a refreshed programme schedule on Monday 23 January, with presenter-led shows and an evolving playlist to better meet the listening needs of the audience throughout the day.
RNZ Concert Manager Liisa McMillan says new presenters Bryan Crump, Siliga Sani Muliaumaseali’i and Carey McDonald received a warm welcome from listeners late last year when they joined long-term hosts Nick Tipping, Clarissa Dunn, and David Morriss.
"It’s exciting to now go live with the new programmes and schedule after months research and planning. Listeners will hear the RNZ Concert they know and love, but with more consideration of what else people are doing while listening across the week.
“For example, we’ll start weekdays with Mornings with Siliga Sani Muliaumaseali’i, a bright and breezy programme with good energy and a pace to suit listeners moving around at the start of the day. The programme will include new releases and firm favourites, as well as music and tidbits relating to the events of the day. Three to Seven with Bryan Crump will host most of the interview content on RNZ Concert, celebrating Aotearoa’s creative communities and events. These two shows will have dedicated producers too.”

While these are more tweaks than wholesale changes to the programming, we know change can be challenging, especially if it is to something you love. We believe there is something for everyone here, and that this programming sets RNZ Concert up for a bright future.
The most significant change is to Opera on Sunday, which will now be part of Music Alive from 7pm on Saturday evenings. Disruption to live music recording around the world during COVID-19 has made it difficult to source enough recordings of the standard we need, and production timelines and broadcast rights mean this will be an issue for another couple of years. For this in mind, we are concentrating all our complete concerts, including opera, into Music Alive for now. To begin we will take you to The Metropolitan Opera in New York. Highlights this season include new productions of Wagner’s Lohengrin, Umberto Giordano’s Fedora, which hasn’t been in the Met's repertory in 25 years, and Mozart’s popular works Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute.
As RNZ Concert marks 90 years on air next month, the current team is working hard to ensure that the station is positioned to be relevant and have a long presence in the lives of music lovers in Aotearoa for many years to come. We hope you will join us for the next exciting chapter!
