The NZSO National Youth Orchestra returns to perform a fiery finale full of inspiring and uplifting music from around the world.

Programme:

Lissa MERIDAN: firecracker

Hailed as 'zany and ear-popping' by critics since its première.

Joshua PEARSON: When a pale blue dot breathes, a crowd of cacophony begins (NYO Composer in Residence)

Inspired by a photograph taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990 of Earth seen from 6 billion kilometres away, the piece is a poetic image of our planet.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture

A lush romantic score inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy

PROKOFIEV: Suite from Lieutenant Kije

Selections from Prokofiev's film score for Lieutenant Kije including the Troika which has come to be associated with Christmas

Arturo MÁRQUEZ; Danzón No 2

'Danzón No 2' has become one of the most performed Mexican orchestral works since its première in 1994. Inspired by danzón, a dance style from Cuba, it gained worldwide popularity thanks to conductor and Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel.
