New Caledonia's largest anti-independence party has celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The Caledonia Together party was formed in 2008 amid a sequence of splits within the anti-independence bloc.

An estimated 1,000 supporters attended the weekend celebrations which came just four weeks before the territory goes to a referendum on independence from France.

The party is led by its founder Philippe Gomes, who is now one of the party's two members of the French National Assembly.

Mr Gomes said if 70 percent vote against independence next month, the door for a future outside France will have closed.
