Fiji man sentenced for raping granddaughter

A 67-year-old Fijian man, convicted of raping his granddaughter, has been sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison at the Suva High Court.

FBC news reported he was found guilty of indecent annoyance, sexual assault and five counts of rape.

The now 11-year-old victim was eight when the offending began.

The judge, Riyaz Hamza, said the crimes had left the victim nervous, scared and ashamed with low self-esteem.

The sentence includes a non-parole period of 10 years and six months.
