Assistance for CNMI following Yutu could top $US100m

Federal assistance given to the Northern Marianas in the wake of super typhoon Yutu could top US$100 million.

The category five storm struck the islands of Saipan and Tinian in October, causing extensive damage.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it had given more than $US21 million to homeowners, and more than US$70 million in low-interest loans had been given to small business owners.

It said it planned to build typhoon-resilient structure to minimise future damage.

Three months on the from typhoon, authorities in the territory say water supplies have been fully restored, while 82 percent of Saipan has electricity again.
