In a statement, it said the frigate Prairial intercepted a fishing boat a week ago in international waters off Nicaragua as part of an operation to curb drug trafficking.

The frigate was notified by a US surveillance aircraft because it was closest to the suspect boat.

The statement said it was the first time that the Tahiti-based vessel was involved in the operation, called Orion III.

There are no details about the offending boat's origin and the fate of its crew.
