Guam's new archbishop, Monsignor Michael Byrnes, has apologised to the victims of his predecessor's sexual abuse.
He was appointed to the role last Thursday, after the Vatican upheld on appeal its sentence against Anthony Apuron.
Mr Apuron was stripped of his office in March last year, after he was found guilty of sexually abusing altar boys in the 1970s.
Michael Byrnes said his appointment was a significant step in the healing process for Guam's church.
"I for my part will pray for my brother Anthony, as I do for his victims," Archbishop Byrnes said.
"I ask for the faithful to also assist Bishop Anthony Apuron in their prayer and penance that he might find grace and repentance and mercy for his soul."
Apuron can still act as a priest but can never return to Guam, Archbishop Byrnes said.
