Bougainville's chief liquor licensing commissioner, Reuben Tokome, has announced a liquor ban from today until mid December.

This comes as the region's referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea draws closer.

Voting starts on November 23rd and is expected to run for two weeks.

The liquor ban affects all liquor outlets, with clubs, restaurants, hotels and motels stopped from supplying or dispensing of liquor from 8 tonight until 19th of December 2019.

All licensed restaurants, guest houses and hotels can serve their guests during meals until the 22nd November.

After the 22nd November the ban will apply to every outlet until 19th December.
