The government said reports of child neglect and abuse were a daily occurrence.

It said poverty was being linked to some of those cases.

According to the Child Welfare Act national database, 3061 cases - involving children - were reported between 2016 and 2018.

The Social Welfare and Child Services Department found that negligence topped its list on the abuse of children in Fiji in 2018 - with 226 cases - followed by 149 cases of physical abuse and 130 of sexual abuse of children in Fiji.

In a statement, the department said cases were mostly received from the hospitals.

Various welfare officers were sent to investigate the cases including talking to the children's parents and encouraging them on the care of their young ones, the department said.
