Five nurses from Fiji have been reportedly detained in Nauru for violating Covid-19 quarantine regulations on the island.

Nauru President Lionel Aingimea said the nurses breached security and distancing rules at the Meneñ Hotel quarantine residence in the Yaren District.

He said after three nurses arrived in quarantine two of their colleagues, who were already on the island, visited them.

Mr Aingimea said all five nurses were taken by police to a remand centre and later ordered by the court to be detained for 14 days.

The President underlined that rules were there to protect everyone from the possible threat and spread of coronavirus in Nauru.

He said every resident in quarantine was briefed and fully informed of the rules, individual responsibilities and penalties.
