Norfolk Islanders are petitioning the Australian federal government to stop increases to land rates and waste management being proposed by the Canberra appointed administration on the island.
The petitioners point out that wages are very low by national standards, land is often not used productively and the ability to pay more, non-existent.
The administration on Norfolk says the island can no longer rely on Canberra to pick up the tab, but the islanders say that in some cases residents face a 1500 percent increase in charges.
Land rates are set to rise by up to 83 percent.

The head of the Accommodation and Tourism Association Rael Donde said the administrator wants the community to come up with another $AU2.37 million dollars.
"We have just conducted a business survey amongst all of our members who are amongst the tourism and accommodation sectors, and 72 percent of the respondents indicate that the impact will be either severe or drasticm," he said.
Donde said the administrator's view that the island sustain itself will end up badly for everyone.
