Rugby - U-20 World Cup

The Fiji Under-20 rugby union team fought hard before going down 46-37 to Australia in the World Rugby U-20 Championship in Stellenbosch, South Africa at the weekend.

The junior Fijians scored four tries against the Junior Wallabies, who recorded seven touch downs.

That is the best result that Fiji has recorded against the Australians in the history of the U-20 World Cup.

Fiji U-20 head coach Ifereimi Rawaqa had named eight overseas-based players in the squad, plus Fijian Drua players, Philip Baselala and Motikiai Murray.

Fiji will meet England in their second pool match on Friday.

Football - women's U-19s

New Zealand have confirmed their place in the quarter-finals of the Oceania U-19 Women's Championship after an 11-0 victory over Papua New Guinea in Suva.

Alexi Cook and Zoe Benson both scored four times for the defending champions.

Tahiti and Cook Islands are both still in with a chance of progressing to the knockout stages following a tightly-contested 0-0 draw in Suva.

Both sides remain in contention in Group C with Cook Islands to face Solomon Islands in the final match on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, also at the weekend, New Caledonia all but sealed their place in the knockout stages with a 4-1 victory over Vanuatu.

In the same group, Samoa defeated Tonga 3-1 with all the goals coming in the second half.

Karate - Solomon Islands

Solomon islands' karate team is in Australia to prepare for the 2023 Oceania Karate Federation Senior and U-21 Championships next month.

The Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports said the team's trip to the Gold Coast is part of its preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games.

Head coach Ronnie Uate'e told SINIS Media that the 10-member team will be in a training camp for four days before heading over to Christchurch, New Zealand for the events.

Four female and six male athletes make up the team.

Olympics - torch

The Olympic torch for the 2024 Paris Summer Games will be in French Polynesia on June 13 next year.

The organising committee has unveiled the route for the flame, which will be carried by 11,000 runners through 400 towns and cities.

Between June 9 and 17 it will be flown to five French territories before completing its course in Paris on July 15.

In French Polynesia, the flame will get to Teahupoo where the Games' surfing competition will be held.

Netball - Pacific Games

The Pacific Games netball competition will also serve as a world ranking event.

Technical elegate for Netball, Nicola Jones, recently visited the country to evaluate the netball facilities and train representatives from the Solomon Islands National Netball Federation as bench officials for the games.

She said the Games are an opportunity for countries to improve their world ranking.
