Tropical Cyclone Jasper has developed into a category 2 cyclone according to the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service.

A tropical cyclone warning is in force for all provinces in the country.

In its latest warning, the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service said at that 2pm local time, Jasper was 195km south-southwest of Tetepare Island in Western province and 270km west-southwest of West Guadalcanal.

Tropical cyclone Jasper is moving south at 9kph towards the waters Southwest of Guadalcanal Island.

It is expected to intensify further as it moves away from the southwest of the Solomon Islands.

Warnings for the country

Expect gale force winds of 63 to 87 kmph to occur over the Western, Choiseul, Isabel, Central, Malaita, Guadalcanal, Makira and Rennell/Bellona Provinces.

Expect winds to reach 37 to 61 kmph over the Temotu province.

Seas will be rough with moderate to heavy swells (2.5 - 5 meters) over most waters.

There is a potential for coastal flooding (inundation) in coastal areas.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to affect most provinces.

The bad weather may lead to possible landslides and flooding over communities living near hill slopes, close to large rivers, streams and low-lying areas.

Sea travellers are urged to consider safety and are discouraged from traveling during bad weather.

Motorists are also advised to use extreme caution when travelling on roads.

People are urged not to attempt to cross rivers and large streams of unknown depth.

People should take precautionary measures as bad weather associated with the tropical cyclone poses a threat to lives and properties.

Locals are advised to listen to the SIBC, the state broadcaster, and all media outlets for further updates.

The next tropical cyclone warning will be issued at 7:30 pm this evening, local time.
