Fijians are being urged by authorities to be extra cautious following 18 house fires during the month of January.

Fiji's National Fire Authority says 67 people have been left displaced - about 16 families, but no injuries or deaths were reported.

The blazes caused an estimated FJ$1.5 million in damage and only one household was insured.

Fire Authority chief executive Puamau Sowane is urging people to be careful, practice fire safety habits and learn fire safety rules.

The majority of the fires happened in the central division, eight in the western division and one in the northern division.

While the cause of the blazes were still being investigated, Sowane said, over 30 percent of Fiji's fires were caused by old and faulty electrical wires.

"They have to be very very careful with fire saftey. People need to use qualified electricians to do their wiring in their homes," he said.

He also urged parents to keep matches and gas lighters away from children as at least one of the fires started because a child "was playing around with a lighter."

Sowane said fire victims may qualify for a government grant of $5000 grant which could go towards rebuilding their lives.
