Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) will elect its new chairman today at its first meeting since the council reinstated. Those in the running for the position include Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, President Wiliame Katonivere and the Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqaama Lalabalavu.
The three other nominees for the position include Ro Teimumu Kepa, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau as well as Minister for iTaukei Ifereimi Vasu.
Vasu said the election of the chairperson and vice-chairperson, who will steer the council to deliver its mandate for the indigenous people, is a "a pivotal moment".
"These leaders will hold office for three years, steering the council through its renewed mandate with wisdom, foresight, and a deep commitment to the welfare of the iTaukei people," he said at the news conference on Tuesday.
The 51 members of the GCC representing the 14 provinces and Rotuma Island will elect the chairperson and vice chairperson.
"This meeting marks the first gathering of the GCC since its reinstatement, and it begins a new chapter in our collective journey," Vasu said.
"The reinstatement of the GCC is a testament to our Government's commitment under the able leadership of the Prime Minister, our nation's resilience, our dedication to unity in diversity and our collective vision for a future where tradition and progress walk hand in hand.
"It is a step forward ensuring that the voices of the iTaukei are heard and respected in the national dialogue," he added.
The two-day meeting is being held at Pacific Harbour at starts at 9.30am today.
