AT THE MOVIES #892   NEW AND IMPROVED?

 

Simon Morris looks nervously at a remake of a childhood favourite, and also reviews a new New Zealand film and a frothy Spanish comedy about two rival actors working together on a prestigious art-film.

 

 

 

Pinocchio is the latest of the Disney Studios’ updates of past successes.   Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Who framed Roger Rabbit) and starring Tom Hanks (Saving Mr Banks).

 

Punch is a New Zealand coming of age film about the unlikely friendship between a schoolboy boxer and a flamboyant, Māori would-be singer.   Starring Tim Roth (Reservoir dogs) it’s the debut feature by academic and short film director Welby Ings.

 

And Official Competition is a satire about the film business, in which two rival actors make their first movie together.  Starring Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martinez.
