AT THE MOVIES #909                  LOOKING AT MEN

Simon Morris is interested to see the effect of the “female gaze” on three new films – a popular male stripper franchise, how fathers and sons affect the women in the family, and a Bafta-nominated story of a woman looking back on a childhood holiday with her own father.

Magic Mike’s last dance sees Channing Tatum take his magic moves to London’s West End.   Co-starring Salma Hayek (Frida) and directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic).

The son comes from the award-winning team that made The father.  Hugh Jackman plays a father facing up to a troubled teenage son.   Co-stars Oscar winners Laura Dern (Marriage story) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (The father), and Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a woman).

And writer-director Charlotte Welles talks about her new multi-award winning British film Aftersun, in which a father and 11-year-old daughter share an idyllic holiday.   It’s currently up for several Baftas, including Best Debut by British Writer, Director or Producer.
