12.30  WOMAD New Zealand first artists announced!

A unique opportunity presented itself with the constraints caused by the global pandemic as WOMAD programmers have dug into the wealth of Aotearoa's musical talent to present a unique array of artists that will deliver the sense of discovery the festival is so well known and loved for. Including Avantdale Bowling Club, Deva Mahal, Fat Freddy's Drop and Shades of Shakti!

In addition to the musical lineup, the World Of Words stage and STEAM Lab return! This time you can look forward to WOMAD debuts from Dr Siouxie Wiles, and Dick Frizzell.

WOMAD International's Head of Programming, Paula Henderson says, "For WOMAD, we are usually very spoilt, we have the whole world at our fingertips in terms of programming.  When we first thought about doing WOMAD with a mainly national event over a year ago initially, I thought no way… but, I was wrong.  It will sound a little strange, but, although challenging (as there were no gigs to go to), spending hours scouring the internet to find new artists that would suit the festival has been really exciting and I am confident that we have a programme that our audience will be overjoyed with."

2PM LIVE Reb Fountain - The Boy Next Door @ The Auckland Arts Festival

New Zealand singer Reb Fountain has made a name for herself with fine song-writing. She won the Taite Prize in 2021, a prize that recognizes outstanding creativity in music.

However, in this concert Reb Fountain pays tribute to another outstanding songwriter: Nick Cave. Together with her band and the Auckland string quartet The Black Quartet, she performs her interpretations of some of Nick Cave’s greatest songs.

The Black Quartet are: Jessica Hindin and Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper on violins, Joseph Harrop: viola; and Rachel Wells on cello.

They’re also joined on stage by Reb Fountain’s band: Dave Khan, on guitars and keyboards, Karen Canzek on bass, and Earl Robertson on drums.

All string arrangements were written by members of the Black Quartet, with musical direction by Dave Khan.

This concert was recorded by RNZ at the Auckland Town Hall and was part of the Auckland Arts Festival in 2021.
