VIDEO PREMIERE: Unchained XL ‘Sixty Fo Mo’

From RNZ Music, 6:00 pm on 17 November 2019

RNZ Music is proud to be the first to share the new single and video from Nigerian Kiwi rapper and producer Unchained XL. ‘Sixty Fo’ Mo’ is a 64-bar verse about anti-African racism, whakapapa and identity, and the imprisonment of American rapper ASAP Rocky.

‘Sixty Fo Mo’ (meaning “64 more”) is a provocative 64-bar verse from Unchained XL, aka Hugh Ozumba, a UK-born, Tāmaki Makaurau-based Nigerian Kiwi rapper and producer. The track is a sequel to his track ‘2 To The 6’, which came out in June.

The track’s lyrics move between the political, the personal and the tongue-in-cheek, covering topics such as anti-African racism, his whakapapa and identity as a Nigerian-Kiwi and the imprisonment of famous American rapper ASAP Rocky in Sweden.

The video is shot by Geoff Ong at the picturesque St Paul’s church on Auckland’s Symond St. Unchained XL is backed by fellow artist and producer Kevin Posey on piano, and Elijah Whyte on drums.

Unchained XL has been releaseing solo material since 2016. His music is a mix of golden age hiphop, afrobeat, African highlife and punk rock, with themes of anti-racism, pan-africanism, cultural identity, faith and consciousness.

UXL takes his inspiration from afrobeat legend and political icon Fela Kuti, as well artists including M.anifest, De La Soul, The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

UXL’s 2019 EP The Migrant Mind received global attention after being featured on international blog OkayAfrica. The EP is a poignant commentary on the refugee crisis and violence faced by migrants around the world.

Drawing from his experience as frontman of a metal band, UXL is known for his highly energetic live performance.
