VIDEO PREMIERE: Skux ‘I Am the Explorer’

From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 20 November 2019

Auckland punk musician Skux shot her new video on Kodiak Island, Alaska where she’s a park ranger. RNZ Music is proud to be the first to share it.

Skux is the alter ego of Ayisha Jaffer, an Auckland musician with a love of punk and a life-long admiration of the riot girl movement.

Punk-rock anthem ‘I Am the Explorer' is from Skux’s debut EP Kudis, which came out in August. It celebrates “independence and being a fearless woman and explorer.”

With material co-written with Dan Walker of Baltimore art-punk trio The Death Set, Jaffer performs live with her band between New Zealand, New York, and everywhere in between.

Jaffer is currently based in Alaska where she works as a park ranger on Kodiak Island, home to some of the world’s largest bears. She teaches outdoor survival skills to kids, monitors animal populations and… shoots music videos.

Her video for ‘I Am the Explorer’ travels via boats and planes to track bears, count salmon and look for invasive species.

Skux’s EP Kudis (pronounced “cooties”) is a call-to-arms for people to “action your concerns and conquer your goals.”

The five-track EP explores several different genres of punk, including nostalgic nods to the golden age of punk-rock.
