Residents of Christchurch's eastern suburbs will be able to repair or rebuild their houses more easily under changes to the city's district plan.

The Minister for Christchurch Regeneration, Megan Woods, this morning approved a proposal clarifying the rules for rebuilds in the Residential Unit Overlay area.

The district plan did not previously have any specific policy for the area, which comprises parts of New Brighton, South New Brighton, Southshore and Redcliffs.

Ms Woods said that was unfair, but this amendment would allow some residents to fix or rebuild their homes without needing resource consent.

The proposal would help eastern Christchurch to move forward, she said.
