The 10-year-old horse, Star, was attacked at Waitati north of the city, and found with more than 40 stab wounds the following day.

The SPCA chief executive described it as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty she had heard of.

Officers have identified persons of interest in the case, but no one has been arrested or charged yet.

Police said information received from the public so far had been very helpful, but more would be welcome.

After being stabbed in a vicious attack in his Waitati paddock at midnight on Sunday, miniature horse Star recovers with Otago Equine Hospital veterinarians Peter Gillespie and Stephanie Bransgrove.
