Litter clean-up at Manukau Harbour beaches

10:02 am on 7 March 2009

A clean-up of litter from Auckland's beaches was taking place on Saturday to educate people about the harm litter causes to marine life.

The clean-up was organised by young people involved in the Department of Conservation's youth leadership programme, and covered five beaches in the Manukau Harbour area.

Bill Truswich from the department says litter can have a devastating effect, when for example plastic shopping bags are mistakenly eaten by marine animals such as dolphins.
