Some 63 percent of the 600 respondents described their experience with the system as "poor" or "very poor".

Other results were also not positive, with 83 percent of victims saying the criminal justice system did not keep them safe, 79 percent saying it did not provide them enough support or information, and 77 percent saying it did not listen to their views, concerns or needs.

Chief victims' adviser to the government Kim McGregor said victims' needs must be at the heart of any criminal justice reform and it was clear more needed to be done to achieve this.

The survey results will inform her recommendations on how the justice system can be improved for victims.
