Hauraki District Council said it was working to make water pods and water bottles available at stations around the town.

Bottles were being delivered to the Gold education centre, Morgan Park and Salvation Army, the council said.

Hauraki District Council asked residents to only use water for drinking, banning showering and clothes washing until further notice.

Hauraki District Mayor Tony Adams said tap water should hopefully be restored to Waihi in the next half hour.

Adams said the break had now been fixed, and water was now being produced in the reservoir.

But he said residents should still restrict their use for the time being.

Residents who need water immediately, but are unable to get to a collection point are encouraged to call the council.
