The woman who brought in the $50 returned two months later to see if it had been claimed, but there was no record of it.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says when the officer was questioned, he brought in $50 in an envelope, saying it was misplaced.

Public counter staff were uncomfortable and laid a complaint, but another officer did not follow it up.

The authority says that was a policing failure.

Waitematā District Commander Naila Hassan says both officers are no longer constables.
