Covid-19 update: Five deaths, 8270 new community cases and 572 in hospital

Another five people with Covid-19 have died and 8270 new community cases have been detected, the Ministry of Health says.

In a statement, the ministry said there were 572 people in hospital and 19 people in ICU. The average age of people hospitalised with Covid-19 is 59.

The seven-day rolling average of case numbers is on the decline, with today's seven-day rolling average at 7585 - last Tuesday it was 9731.

There are 53,066 active community cases around the country.

Of today's five deaths, one was from Auckland, one from Waikato, two from MidCentral and one was from Tairāwhiti; one was in their 70s, three were in their 80s, and one was over 90. They were one female and four male.

There have been 602 Covid-19 deaths in total and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 12.

Yesterday, the ministry announced 11 more deaths and 6242 new community cases.

The ministry said the seven-day rolling yestrday was 7986 - the previous Monday it was 10,169.
