A police officer has been injured in an alleged head-on hit and run crash.

The collision happened at a busy Palmerston North intersection, about 2.45pm today.

"A vehicle has hit a police car head-on at the intersection of Tremaine and Rangitikei Streets," police said in a statement.

"The offender did not stop and continued driving, fleeing the scene at speed."

The police officer was moderately injured in the crash, and was being given medical treatment, they said.

One person was arrested a little over an hour after the crash, after police made inquiries in the area.

People in Palmerston North were being asked to take another route to avoid the intersection of Tremaine and Rangitikei Street while the scene examination was under way.
